"You who bring good tidings... lift your voice with a shout... do not be afraid... 'Here is your God!'" (Isa. 40:9)

Always There

Posted on June 11th, 2009 in Devotional by Jonnie Wright

Chatty, my bird-stalking cat, caught a sparrow today, probably a fledgling. My cat, of course, brought her prize to me–that is to say, she brought the bedraggled bird into the house and proceeded to play with it. I scooped it up, took it outside, and placed it high on an ivy trellis. If the disheveled bird had just stayed put, my prowling cat would have grown tired of the hunt and it would have been safe. I could see the big picture of protection and shelter, but the frantic bird could not. So off it flew, not soaring upwards, but gliding downwards, right back into the waiting maw of my eager-to-play cat. Needless to say, the cat was the sparrow’s undoing.

This real-life drama seems to me a metaphor for what occurs in our own harried lives.   We Christians often find ourselves in  ruffled-feathered circumstances we do not understand. God, however, sees the big picture and wants to lift us above the danger. But what do we do? We struggle with our problem alone and end up caught by the devil’s schemes as he ”roams the earth seeking whom he can devour.” If the sparrow had trusted me, it would have been safe; just as if we trust God in threatening situations, we too can stay out of harm’s way.

So the next time you feel like flying off and trusting your own solutions, remember, God has His eye on the sparrow–and on you.

Fibro Symptoms the Same Worldwide

Posted on June 7th, 2009 in Fibromyalgia, Health News by Jonnie Wright

Regardless of the geography or climate you live in, the societal culture that has shaped you, the type of food you eat, or the language you speak, the core symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) patients living worldwide are the same. Kevin Murphy, M.D., and colleagues from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals sought to determine if the many symptoms of FM and this condition’s impact on life was the same in diverse areas of the world.* In particular, they stratified patients into three groups: United States, Europe, and other regions (e.g., Canada, Australia, Mexico, etc.). Patients completed an exhaustive array of questionnaires (in their native language) and the results for each of the three groups were compared.Across the three regions or groups, consistency in the following averaged scores were observed:

  • pain of 6.5 to 6.9 on a scale from zero to ten
  • FM Impact Questionnaire score of 60 to 62 points (100-point scale)
  • sleep problem index of 58 to 61.7 (100-point scale)
  • vitality score of 24 to 28 (100-point scale)
  • physical functioning score of 42.4 to 44.4 (100-point scale)
  • mental health of 55.7 to 59.8 (100-point scale)

The average age of each group was 48.4 to 49.4 years, and average duration of FM symptoms was 8.1 to 9.7 years. The authors concluded that patients with FM, despite diverse demographics, had largely similar disease characteristics that were consistent with moderate-to-severe symptoms.

Even Mild Exercise Can Reduce Pain

You want to exercise, but you’re afraid that the amount of exercise your doctor tells you to do might throw you into a flare. On the other hand, you want to keep your strength up to continue with your daily activities and responsibilities. Besides, exercise is not only good for your heart and other muscles, but also for your self-esteem and overall well-being.

A study presented at this year’s America Pain Society (APS) meeting by Dane B. Cook, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin, in Madison demonstrates that you might not have to work as hard as you think to benefit from an exercise program.*

Go Hug Your Cat

In trying to find information on National Donut Day I discovered there really is a day for everything.

For instance, did you know today is Hug Your Cat Day? Not that you need an excuse… but go ahead… go hug your kittie!

If you’ve not yet had a chance to watch the video about Christian the lion that was a hot YouTube video a couple months ago, go spend a couple minutes being inspired. It gave me goosebumps!

How to Use TwittIf you have a chronic illness or live with daily chronic pain you are physician may have requested for you to keep a diary of your pain levels so that he can monitor what activities or influences in your life can increase your level of pain. He may have recommended that you also record your sleep patterns and even your diet

If you try to do this, however, you may have found it to be a cumbersome and overwhelming task. Despite this, the information that you collect by keeping a pain log can be extremely helpful in helping you and your doctor or locate what it is that could be caused in an increase of inflammation in for an extreme flare up of your illness.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Surging Among Women

Posted on June 5th, 2009 in Health News by Jonnie Wright

Why the increase? Some of the growth can be accounted for by the fact that doctors now have more awareness of how to diagnose the disease. Other factors are at work too, I learned from Eric L. Matteson, MD, chair of rheumatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Hormones are known to play a role (since RA typically improves with pregnancy but comes back after delivery) but researchers are examining possible environmental explanations as well. For instance, researchers recently learned that there is an association between living near busy highways and development of RA.

Here’s another theory: For unknown reasons, some people are prone to develop RA after exposure to particular viruses. After a virus has made the rounds and exposed large numbers of people, it may be dormant for a long period, since many people have built immunity. That immunity eventually fades — then, if the same virus returns, it once more affects many people, including some who are susceptible to developing RA. Dr. Matteson noted that such a swell in chronic diseases due to reemergence of a triggering cause, such as virus, is not uncommon.
